When my son Nicholas was born, we noticed several purplish patches on the left side of his face. Initially we thought they might be bruises from the birth process, but when they didn't fade we discovered that they were a type of birthmark called hemangioma. These birthmarks have garnered a wide variety of responses over the years. When he was a baby we would get dirty looks from people who apparently thought we were harming him. Then when he was a toddler, most folks assumed that he had just taken a fall. As he got older and people asked, we had him explain that the marks were there because too many angels had kissed him on his way down from heaven.
