Hand Coloring Photos

Filed under: Scrapbook Tips and Techniques — Excerpt from: Michaels on Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Marshalls Photo Oils are a different type of oil paint than you may have seen or used. They were specifically developed to be transparent so that they could be used to add color to black and white photos. Begin by purchasing one of Marshalls Transparent Oil Handcoloring sets and/or Pencil sets. Squeeze a pea size drop of each oil color onto your palette. Apply the oils sparingly to your photo, using 100% cotton applicators or swabs. Just erase with a cotton ball or plastic eraser if you dont like something and try again.

What to shoot in October 2005

Filed under: Photography — Excerpt from: ePHOTOzine on Wednesday, September 28, 2005

October is the month where everything changes. The onset of Autumn, showing the signs of change last month, is now in full swing. The clocks change, making an obvious difference to the hours of daylight and shifting the time of sunset considerably. The countryside explodes into colour while all of a sudden the heating needs turning on and a trip down to the local supermarket is needed for a supply of light bulbs. It is the time of year when things start to become difficult for the wildlife in the countryside. Not yet desperately difficult, but certainly harder than they have been through the plentiful time of the late summer and earlier part of Autumn. The berries, abundant a few short weeks ago, have mostly disappeared along with most of the nut harvest, hidden if not devoured. Thankfully, the migratory species have mostly now departed, relieving some of the strain, but for a good part, others have replaced them from further north, looking for somewhere to spend their winter!

Alternate uses for scans: Create shadowboxes, framed pieces or greeting cards from your scans. Other ideas for scanning: Try scanning with fresh flowers, family mementoes, or your child's favorite snack. Scan a baby photo along with the outfit worn in the photo. Always remember to protect the scanner bed and your photos from liquids and scratches.

Collected Memories 3-Ring Albums

Filed under: Scrapbook Tips and Techniques — Excerpt from: About.com on Sunday, September 25, 2005

The Classic Scrapbook is available in several colors and very affordable. The archival quality, drop-in style, page protectors make loading your finished pages a snap. The page size for the Classic album is 11"x 11 5/8" and the rings of the album are 1" in diameter. This is a perfect size for your smaller albums, such as theme albums, holiday albums, and gift books. I plan to use the Classic Scrapbook to complete an album that focuses entirely on our recent trip to Disney World with the family. I was trying to decide between an 8 1/2" x 11" or a 12" x 12" album, and was delighted to see the size of this scrapbook will be perfect for my vacation pages.

Filed under: Scrapbook Tips and Techniques — Excerpt from: About.com on Friday, September 23, 2005

This is a card that I made for my best friend, Sonya. I made a window in the front of the card. I then placed the flower between pieces of transparency plastic, mounting it to the underside of the window. If you dont want to press flowers yourself, or you dont have access to flowers and other foliage, you can always purchase them in craft stores or from online stores that offer them. However, keep in mind that pressed flowers are expensive to buy. Pressing flowers is easy and inexpensive. It requires no special equipment or expertise.

5 Ways to Attach Transparencies/Overlays to Your Layouts

Filed under: Scrapbook Tips and Techniques — Excerpt from: About.com on Wednesday, September 21, 2005

Printing journaling on transparencies gives scrapbookers the ability to place titles and journaling anywhere on a page without covering up the background paper or images. This technique can be used to take the place of printing directly on large format papers, such as popular 12"x12" backgrounds. It can also be used to overlap text on photos and embellishments. Pre-printed overlays or transparencies come in a huge variety of themes and can allow scrapbooker to create quick and easy layouts. On the sample scrapbook page shown here, the journaling boxes and title have been printed on a laser jet transparency sheet. The biggest challenge when using transparencies is figuring out how to attach them to your scrapbook pages. Since they are completely clear, almost any adhesive you use will show through.
